Take an Interest in Others – The Christian Musicians Devotional

Christian musicians are not called to be rock stars for Jesus. We are called to re-present His message to our generation. We do not have to be famous to do our ministry—we have to be faithful. It’s not about us. It is all about loving God and then loving people closer to Him.

Take an Interest in Others

“Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.”

Philippians 2:3-4

These verses sum up the difference between being in a band and being a music ministry. Bands need to be ambitious and draw attention to themselves. Each musician in the band must strive to be the best and let everyone know why he is the best by talking about their music experience and gear. Music ministries need to draw attention to Jesus and the importance of His message. Each member of the band must talk about how being a Christian has affected their lives in order to accomplish their mission of drawing people closer to Jesus.

The mission of bringing people closer to Jesus unites each member of a Christian music ministry. When we have a clear focus on what we are called to do, it is easier to work together with one mind, one goal. We keep our egos in check as we strive together to find the best methods and tools to connect with people. But egos tend to flare up when we lose sight of our calling. We become selfish, wanting to be the center of attention and to receive accolades for our talent. It’s only human. But if we are wise, we will recognize this behavior in ourselves and refocus before we hurt other people. It is much easier to take an interest in others when we are not busy promoting ourselves.

Prayer: Father, show me how to set aside my ambitions so that I can work in love with one purpose with my band mates. Keep us focused on our calling to love others to You. We want serve You and love people more than we want to be famous.
